that supported Believe in Tomorrow. They had a great turnout and raised $155 plus accepted many donations!

“Give a Buck”
For each $1 contribution to the SECC, donors are recognized with a notecard with their name that will be displayed on the “donor wall” in the main lobby. As a challenge to staff, the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Bureau Chiefs and Deputy Bureau Chiefs have offered to match your donations that are received through October 30! Please see Anna Sanchez in Room 114 (across from the Commissioner's suite) to make contributions and receive your notecards!

Each Tuesday and Thursday in October, for a $2 donation to SECC per day or $15 for the entire month, staff who are not required to wear a designated uniform are permitted to wear jeans to work. Please see Jessica Pantoja in room 111 to make your donation and receive your jeans placard. More than $300 has already been donated through the “Jeans Days” fundraiser - thanks to all who have contributed so far!

DPC's SECC Fall Festivities
This year, DPC's Employee Recognition Committee has decided to not only raise funds for the SECC (as we do each year), but to also put the FUN in fundraiser by hosting our first ever SECC Fall Festivities on October 8 from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. near the garden, behind the pool. We will have a Car Wash, Food, Drinks, and our very own D.J. Ray with a fantastic selection of Music!
We are pleased to announce that Gail and the Farmers Market will be present as well (they will not be set up in Springer) and will be selling the last of the Garden's delicious fresh Fall produce. This will be an exciting day that is open to the entire Herman Holloway Campus.
In addition to your participation on October 8th, DPC also CHALLENGES each and every State Employee to make a donation online. Let's work together to ensure this year's contributions are the grandest ever and let everyone know that DPC ROCKS!

Statewide SECC Kickoff!
Make sure you join us on Thursday, September 10th at 11:00 at Delaware Technical Community College, Corporate Training Center #400 for the Statewide SECC Kickoff event. Employees are also encouraged to attend and all attendees will have a chance to win a drawing for a $25 gift card! The Governor and other distinguished guests will be in attendance. We will have food, prizes and several charities on hand to share their stories.
We also will be accepting donations for Sunday Breakfast Mission!! The Mission is specifically in need of the below dry goods used for its family food boxes:

Simply log in to ePledge by September 18, make your selection (a one-time donation, payroll deduction or choose not to donate at this time) and you're entered. Employees may also fill out a paper pledge form if they have limited access to a computer. No donation is required to enter the drawing.
Employees who attend the Statewide Kickoff Event on September 10 can also enter in another drawing for a $25 gift card provided by United Way. The kickoff begins at 11:00 a.m., at Delaware Technical Community College, Terry Campus, Dover, Corporate Training Center, Rooms A and B. Best Dressed Bucket and Charity Day
Governor Bacon Health Center's is hosting their big SECC event - “BEST DRESSED BUCKET”! This is our version of penny wars. Dress up your Penny Bucket to be judged most unique (while collecting pennies during the duration of the campaign for charity)! Crazy Hat Day!
Statewide Benefits and the Insurance Coverage Office had a Crazy Hat Day fundraiser on October 7th! We asked for a suggested donation of $1 to participate and $1 to vote for your favorite. Director Brenda Lakeman will wear the winning hat to a leadership meeting if the offices jointly raise $300 (approximately $25 more than last year) over the course of the various SECC fundraising activities in September and October. So far we are two-thirds of the way to our goal! View Photo.

On September 24, the 2014 Governor's Cup 5K Run/Walk, 1 Mile Fun Walk and Health Fair collected a total of 387 lbs. of donated food from participants for the Food Bank of Delaware, which will provide 322 meals for hungry Delawareans.

Today many employees came out to learn about our many charities and to hear our speakers share their inspirational stories. We were fortunate to have Governor Markell, Lt. Governor Matt Denn and Ann Visalli on hand to rally employees together to help improve the quality of life for all Delawareans through their donations to the campaign. With everyone's help, this campaign can change lives! Remember - No gift is too small!

DELDOT'S AWARENESS WALL
When Brenda Hughes heard that she was honored with a “Pink Ribbon” on DelDOT's Breast Cancer Awareness Wall, she couldn't wait to stop by and see the display. Brenda is a 32-year Breast Cancer survivor who has a few special ties to DelDOT. Her husband, Dennis Hughes, retired from South District Administration after 40 years of service. Their son, D.J. Hughes, worked as an Engineer with the department after graduating from college. Standing beside Brenda is her mother Lydia, a ten-year Breast Cancer Survivor. Brenda found out about the ribbon campaign through her niece and current DelDOT Team Member, Dawn Hopkins. She expresses her sincere appreciation to everyone involved in this effort. “From one DelDOT family to another, thank you.”
Human Resources sponsored the Breast Cancer Awareness Wall as part of their fundraising efforts for the SECC and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Michelle DeLong and Melody Kelley worked together on the awareness wall. Melody's mother, Libby Dawson, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 1997. She had a double mastectomy and was in remission until 2000. Then in 2000, the cancer came back, and she unfortunately died in 2003. Melody said, “I knew she would be proud of me for helping out other people who have been touched with cancer, but especially men and women who have been affected by breast cancer. My sister-in-law's dad also had breast cancer probably ten years ago. So I always hold his story near to my heart as well.”
Michelle said of this experience, “I went into this SECC project knowing that I would experience sadness for many. To my surprise, with each ribbon that was sold there was a different story that unfolded and it opened my eyes a little wider regarding my co-workers, too. As expected, some messages on the ribbons were heartbreakingly sad, but there were even more stories of triumph and courage, faith, and support that were shared on those ribbons. That wall represents more than just Breast Cancer Awareness to me; it represents what a wonderful, caring, compassionate group of co-workers we have here at DelDOT.”

SECC Kickoff Event on September 10th–Come join the fun!
We'll be holding an official kickoff for the 2013 campaign on September 10th at the Elizabeth W. Murphey School on Kings Highway in Dover. All employees are welcome to attend the kickoff. More than 35 SECC charities will be at the event to showcase how their services benefit Delawareans. A formal program will begin at 1 p.m. where representatives from the United Way and the Murphey School will speak, along with state dignitaries. Hope to see you there!

DMS/DHSS Bake Sale
We had an awesome variety of enticing goodies – the assortment was overwhelming. Some baked items disappeared off the table in a heartbeat in their entirety... slices weren't even an option. Many employees prepared baked items and also had family members help in the process – creating some very delicious looking and sweet tempting cakes, breads, cookies, muffins, cupcakes, truffles, brownies (our big seller), and for the weight-conscious – a fresh fruit bowl was amongst the pickins!
We enjoyed the camaraderie and making "green dough" for SECC... it was a memorable day. Even the crumbs disappeared.

Department of Correction SECC Kick Off Event on Sept. 6th
The Department of Correction Administration Building in Dover held an SECC Kick Off event Sept. 6 that featured representatives from Ronald McDonald House Delaware and the Elizabeth W. Murphey School, The Kick Off was not designed to be a solicitation event, but an opportunity for employees to learn more about the SECC and the charities it benefits. Along with the charity representatives and their displays, an ongoing PowerPoint presentation highlighted past fundraising success along with information on this year's fundraising activities. Members of the building's SECC committee also provided freshly popped popcorn, cookies and brownies. For a first time event, the Kick Off was well received as employees stopped by throughout the event's two-hour duration.
Department of Child Support Enforcement held SECC kickoff events in all three counties last week.
Director Chuck Hayward and SECC Coordinator Jane Hahn spoke at the events as the 20th year of helping nonprofits in our state begins. All that attended received a “golden” candy bar with a chance to win discounts at upcoming events and some even were lucky enough to win the popular casual day pass. Everyone is looking forward to their annual Chili Cook-off and Cupcake Wars along with other fun events. Just one week into the campaign they have already bettered their previous year's participation and surpassed their donations from last year by over $1000.
Department of Finance employees are encouraged to pay $1 to wear their favorite MLB team jersey or sweatshirt to work on September 28th. Go Team!!
OMB/Government Support Services had their first SECC fundraiser, GSS Olympics - Day 1.
They had 22 participants. A Wii competition was held and Becky Lovin was the winner of the WEE cup for having greatest distance in the Homerun Derby. Eddie Tunstall and Peter Korolyk were the winners of the WEE cup for Ladder Ball tournament! Great Fun was had by all!
Chairs and Captains Complete Trainings
Trainings were held in July and August for the Chairs and Captains of the 2012 Campaign. We were excited to offer some of the trainings offsite at some of our approved charitable organizations. We started off at the Elizabeth Murphy School in Dover. Our training was held in their auditorium and we learned about the history of the school and what they do for those children that are less fortunate. Their mission is to “be a fostering home where children, who would otherwise be neglected, may have a happy childhood; and where they may have the fullest opportunity to develop toward useful and efficient lives.”
Next we moved on to the Cancer Support Community in Wilmington. They are housed in a home that can be traced back to the late 1700s when it served as a tenant farmhouse. The beautiful building and surrounding gardens make it a wonderful place to “ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community”.
Our last stop was the Delaware Children's Museum in Wilmington. They hosted the event and we got to “play” with all of their toys. What a great place to educate children and our donations through the SECC will help underprivileged children get free passes to the museum along with other opportunities.

This just in... DelDOT is planning a kickoff event that will include 4 or 5 approved charitable organizations. They will have exhibits, a bake sale and Secretary Bhatt will be attending. Great information and fun will be had by all!
